Whoever told you is wrong. It is illegal to remove muffler / catalytic converter from a car that came with it from the factory, no matter how long ago it was made.

I'd also like to point out the myth that removing the cat will gain you HP. Read this article, and brighten your horizons:

While it IS on a Honda, the lessons learned is applicable elsewhere.

It all depends on which province you are from. Here in AB we do not have emission testing and you can get away with just about anything.I drive a 91 Trans Am in the summer with a 3 inch straight pipe w/o the cat convertor.
Whenever I see a cop I lay off the gas just incase tho.

It is illegal because of the loud noise and backpressure crackling the straight pipes will make. I put dual straight pipes on my car but I installed resinators just before the rear bumper to make them legal but you'll still get good sound without getting a ticket. good luck

I think yes If you have any emissions, u can bypass this!!!! If you have to have to have a Cat, then gut it, same on the muffelers. Split them cut out the guts then weld them back to factory looks. Trust me I do it here in NC, USA

Maybe you can get away with it out in the country, but you'll get busted for too much noise in a city.

Yea, that's what we need, more people to take off their catalytic converters so we get more nasty crap in the air. Good suggestion soggy!!!
