sense i do not believe the man to be a traitor this is what i will do I will list all the points of why he is a traitor and coward and respond to them, i seen from other people I will try my best to be unbiased I can't promise i won't be though. 1) Watada has sworn an oath to protect this country and uphold the constitution by deserting such duties he is a coward and not a man of his word and a traitor to his country. My opinion to this: He promised to uphold the constitution, which I think most people will agree that this war has violated some parts of what this country was all about. As far as being a coward, you don't even have to agree with him but i can see him not as a coward in anyway. A coward would run to Canada, he stayed in his military base, probably with thousands of people that hates his guts. He has a better chance of dying in his base i think than in iraq. He is facing 6 years in jail and going to be stripped of all honor........ wait lemme finish before posting please

I'm sure he knew he would lose all his benefits when he made this decision, and I'm sure he knew he would go to jail too, i just don't see any other way around it. Yet he did it anyway, right or wrong this man is brave.a
2) In his absense he would have abandoned the troops and fellow soldiers, because of his cowardice others will die in his place.
My response: So he goes to war instead, fights along with his soldiers, forget for a moment if the war is right or wrong. But he believes it is wrong, he truly believes he is committing a crime, he believes there is no honor in this war. His troops would be commiting a crime by going to fight an illegal war, does he commit the crimes along with them or stand up and tell the troops what they are doing is wrong?
3) Do not question your F****** government just do what it says.
My response: Do you think the germans should have questioned hitler? Always question your government, or be mindless puppets....
leave out everything i have plz

Hi!
I read Lt. Watada's complete interview and my opinion is, he wouldn't have been any good to his men, he could endanger them all by his lack of leadership. I also think he feels if he goes, it is very likely he would be killed. And simply that, not cowardice. This is an unpopular war with most Americans, but it is a Declared War, unlike Vietnam...also unpopular with most Americans. His going public won't help him in his Court Martial.
No matter how many Americans support him and his decision. Even with going to prison, dishonorably discharged and loss of benefits, he knows he will live through that. Why he joined the Military in the first place, I'll never know.
Thanks for reading my opinion.

Why not let the man make his point when he's court-martialed (which should happen soon enough), huh? There are people around in charge of saying what is to be held against him from a legal viewpoint. Now, I agree it takes an awful lot of guts to stand your ground as a rejector, and not simply flee on the other side of the border in such a case.
