There are many good brands. There is no substitute for playing the guitar yourself before you buy. Go to the store and play all of the guitars you are considering until you are satisfied that you've found the one that you like the sound of and that you'll be happy with. (I'm assuming you already play because you're considering spending so much money, but if not, bring a friend who plays the kind of music you want to play. Choose one that you like the sound of and also ask your friend's opinion.)
Martin and Gibson are pretty well-respected. But there are other good brands, too.

Seagull The Original S6 Acoustic Guitar.
James Blunt plays a Seagull, and I got a starter last year.
They are well reknowned, reliable, and affordable.
Check out the site, they go in detail to show you how each guitar is made. You can also purchase on line.

I, myself, have a 310-CE Taylor ($1,500). Best guitar in the world. I bought the last one on the west coast though. If I were you, I would consider a Taylor in the 200,300, or 400 series. It would be the only guitar you would need in your life. It has an amazing sound and when you play it you can smell the wood. Fantastic guitar!

You might want to check out Carvin guitars. They don't have the name recognition as Martin or Gibson, but in my opinion they play and sound better than the more expensive guitars. I have a C980T.

Check out the Martin Shenandoah.
You might also contact the Elderly Instrument Comapany. Besides good deals on new instruments, they sell trade-ins, classic and antique instruments.

If you have $2,000 to spend, I would seriously consider a Taylor.
