Matilda, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl are great ones. J&JP is probably the most advanced of the three.
The three novels by EB White are great. (Charlottes Web, The Trumpet of the Swan, and Stewart Little)
Louis Sachar wrote great books for older children, including the Wayside stories.
I can't think of the author off the top of my head, but she wrote Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing and the other "Fudge" books. They are a little more advanced books, but still age appropriate.
The Chronicles of Narnia are good books, they are age appropriate and definately more advanced reads.
Another excellent one is "The Hobbit" by JRR Tolkein. It was his children's book that led into the Lord of the Rings trilogy- which I doubt he would be able to read yet- but if so, its no less age appropriate than Harry Potter.
Happy Reading!

I liked any of Diana Wynne Jones's stuff, especially the Chrestomanci series, which is along the same lines as Harry Potter/Lemony Snicket. I'd recommend her "Howl's Moving Castle" (very different from the Studio Ghilbi animated production) and "The Dark Lord of Derkholm."
Also check out Lloyd Alexander's Prydain series, which includes books like "The Black Cauldron" & "The High King" among other great books.
Plus, there's always the "Indian and the Cupboard" series by Lynne Reid Banks.

Try the Eragon Series (2 books) and the Narnia Series (Narnia would probably be the easiest read)
My 10 year old cousin just finished reading the Eragon book and he loved it.

The Chronicles and Narnia. Thats one of the best series of all times. Lewis' won the Pulitzer for book seven. I am in my late teens and I just got the entire series and it brought me back to my younger days of reading book two, the lion the witch and the wardrobe.
