Honest, open, must have a good shoulder and a severe case of a sense of humor!

The first and foremost thing that I require from a friend is whatever I say to them, it stays with them. If the trust is not there, they've gotta go. The other quality I look for in a friend is that tell be honest with me; if they think I am screwing up, then by God, don't be afraid to tell me. The third quality is that I can depend on them for help if I get myself into trouble. This is what I try to be to my friends, and thess 3 qualities are all I expect from them. Think that is fairplay?

Loyalty! Trust is right up there too. I have found through personal experience though, loyalty is the toughest one to comeby and makes for the best friends. I have only had a handful of "Loyal" friends in my lifetime that had my back even when I wasnt around and took up for me when others might have been putting me down. This is a true test of friendship. Everything else is just icing on the cake.
You can be all of the other things like, caring, devoted, giving, common intrests, but those can be faked and the loyalty when you arent around wont be fake.

These are some of my thoughts..............
A good friend is someone who you can talk openly with, tell them exactly what you feel about a variety of things, and bounce ideas off them if you need help, and they accept you for the person you are.
You take an interest in their life and they take an interest what is happening in your life.
They will always be there to help you when no one else will.
A good friend is NOT someone who only calls to ask you for something, they will call to ask how your week has been or they will call you, because they know you are their friend and they can chat to you.
Your friend is honest and open with you, and you are the same to them.
And last of all, you can have a good laugh together, as they have a good sense of humour too :)

Good question....
I am pretty...hmm... mature, so I can take a look at what I like about my long-time good friends:
>true caring and love for me.... they are sincerely joyful when I am happy, when I achieve something I have my heart set on, when I am 'doing well'
>sincere interest in my wellbeing... they won't mince words if they think I am doing something destructive to myself or others
>a 'spiritual connection'... somehow we are on 'the same page' and don't feel inclined to make nasty little judgements... I guess that is also RESPECT and I choose most of my friends on how respectful they are (meaning not judging and condemning)
>really really fun to be with... more of that connection (above) meaning that we sometimes fall off our chairs laughing, or do goofy things together
>they are connected with my family and ask about my kids, granddaughter, etc... I'm also interested in their family...
>I know that not only could I land up on their doorstep at 2 am in a blizzard on a work night and they would put me up happily, but I also know that my kin would get the same treatment based on our connection
>my friends are interested in self-improvement and moving forward in their lives... they don't look to me to prop them up in any addictions or bad habits... people like that would more apt to be clients from back in my social work days

Well, what i look for in a friend is mostly, if i can actually talk to the person without being judged on my feelings and someone who is there for me when i need them. Also returning the same to them. Someone who can make me laugh when i'm down, and someone to have a great time with in general.

Qualities that you wish you had in your life. Ability to be able to go to them no matter what, to trust them no matter what, someone who will back you up even if your wrong (and stand up to you when your wrong), someone who will guide you to make good decisions (not influence you in drugs and drinking, to rob banks, etc). Someone who will always rem your birthday, to always ask you "how are ya?". Someone who would take you in, or help you. They never lie, they tell you how it is. They protect you, never betray you.
Qualities in a friend relate very much to family. They are family, loving you for you.

A good friend is someone that is honest to you no matter what consequences may arise because of it.
Loyalty is another one, but I still hold honesty as the #1.
