Read the founding thinkers of the specific philosophy. (Though they are not the first philosophers) I began with Plato, and Aristotle; working my way through time from there. Various religious texts also contain quite a bit of philosophy. If you want a stimulating read, I would recommend the Bible.

I would never recommend some man's summery of philosophy. You will never receive pure information and knowledge; it is always filtered through the author’s bias. I say, go to the source and read the book for yourself.

Think critically when you read, don’t take in others ideas just because they wrote it and you never heard it before. Think for yourself and discover as you go. Don’t simply accept but instead consider ideas before you accept. Be willing to admit you are wrong when it is apparent you are. Don’t disregard the simple questions; many times those questions are much more meaningful than the complex ones. Last of all understand that many things are false, but still search for truth in everything,.

Hodder Murray's Philosophy in Focus series is a surprisingly well written elementary text aimed at advanced level students, though other beginners may well reap its rewards.
Then perhaps Aristotle's and then Plato's works may be read.
There are also various discourses on metaphysics available. It will be particularly interesting to read the Bible, the Quaran and then the Pali Tripitaka (good translations are hard to find).

In an indirect way, the book that got my into Philosophy was Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, Robert Pirsig. It is a classic that deals with Metaphysics. It really isn't about motorcycles. Read the reviews on-line about it first, but it really got me interested in more philosophical thinking. Best of luck to you.

"Sophie's World" by J. Gaarder. We used it in our general philosophy class. It is a fictional story about a little girl who is, literally, tossed into the world of philosophy. It is an easy read and keeps the concepts of philosophy simple and easy to understand.

i say first go with what interests you.
for example myself: i love music.
so i began readign biographies of certain artists which led me to philosophy. i.e. jimi hendrix, jim morrison, .....
i also am a believer of buddhism so buddah was also fun to read and i also like confucius.
when reading philosophies by people you relate to by common interests its more entertaining i believe.
