Maybe it's time for something serious...?
Try "Anne Frank: A Diary of a Young Girl" - but if that's too much, then how about "Rip Van Winkle" by Washington Irving?

The Hardy Boys are worth a try, but since he seams to like fantasy try The Hobbit, Artemis Fowl, Bartimaeus Trilogy and The Chronicles of Narina series. Other good books are The Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell, Big Red by Jim Kjelgaard. Mark Twain books are great because it fit a range of reading levels. Other great books include Bridge to Terabithia, Hatchet, True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, Witch of Blackbird Pond, Johnny Tremain, and The Little House on the Prairie series. I read these books as a kid and many are great even know for a quick read.

I have six children ...five boys and all great readers . It would be very disappointing to buy a book he has already read . Why don't you look on Ebay at the second hand or out of print book section . You can get the most wonderful hard back adventure books and the sellers are really helpful. It would also give him an appreciation of beautifully bound books

The classics such as Treasure Island, The Time Machine, any Charles Dickens, any Rudyard Kipling, any Lewis Carroll.

If he's more advanced then you were at that age, think of what you liked to read when you were a year or two older.

A good reader is a very powerful tool, I was a good reader, I was also a poor student, my parents sent me to the so. shore learning center for "Evaluation", after setting up the "Jump Starter" wires to my brain, they said that I had the reading and comprehension level of an 18 yr old, at age 9, my mother asked "Why are his grades so terrible", they said his reading skills surpassed the class, I was doing great, until he threw it "He's just lazy" !

You could encourage your nephew to read non fiction books.
My niece looks forward to her Christmas presents from me every year and I only give her books which will teach her something new.
Obviously a 9 year old boy has preferences of his own. Find out what they are but I guarantee he will like books on the history of warfare, chess, computers...
