None of my guppies tummys turn black during pregnancy. As a matter of fact, my most prolific breeder has a silver tummy that stays silver during her pregnancies. They can be just fat, but if they are as round as they are long, then they are going to drop babies soon. They don't build nests. The female lays along the bottom while giving birth, then the babies hide as soon as they are born.

You can buy a nesting box to put her in which catches the babies and keeps them seperate from the rest of the fish, but I don't use one. The mollies I had ate the babies like crazy, but my guppies don't eat many at all. During the summer, I had at least one female give birth each week. Since they had anywhere from 10 to 50 each time, I wouldn't have minded them eating more.

I have lots of things the babies can hide in and under around the tank. You will know for sure when you wake up one morning and she is no longer fat. The babies are clear, tiny, and fast, so you really have to look to find them. After a few weeks they will get their color, and a few weeks after that they will be big enough to tell males from females.

The guppies are live bearers and the female will drop the babies while swimming around the tank when the time is right. If you look very close under her tummy you will see a little lump, kind of
like a belly button. This appears a day or so before she drops he babies. If you want to keep the young its a good idea to get a separate tank, breeding net or area for her so that the other fish don't eat the young. At least put some breeding weed in the tank for the young to try and hide in. When the young arrive hatch out some live brine shrimp (eggs available from pet shop) great food for them. Usually no trouble to get the young to eat. hope that helps, go well

A bulge is a big indicaton that the female is pregnant. Make sure you are not overfeeding your fish and watch how the male behaves closely. Usually, pregnant females are not as active unless it's feeding time. I would buy a seperate "baby net" just in case. When the female has her babies it is critical you have this in your tank for the survival of the new fish.(Most likely the female will die after birth) It's better to keep her in the same tank instead of removing her since the aquarium has built and ecosystem of its own and it's healthier than throwing her in new environment. You also want to make sure that she is not just sick. Sometimes fish get fungal infections that make their bellys look bloated, is there a change of color in the scales, are their patches of discoloration anywhere on the body, cottony growths, clamped fins etc..

use a home ultrasound test to be sure.males are not too reliable to base any decisions on in this area.he may not think it is his and needs a dna test before nesting!
