I just got my 6 month old ball python and he always spends time in his cave. The most he does is poke his head out from the cave but then when I get close to the cage he goes inside. I don't mean to scare him. Should I let him be and leave him alone for a few days or do I see if he will let me pick him up? Advice please

Ball pythons are nocturnal, so it is their natural instinct to hide and sleep during the day. Go ahead and start handling your snake and try to do it for a little while each day so it gets used to you.

Good luck with your snake. I am sure you will truly come to enjoy the time you get to spend with it. They are fascinating and beautiful creatures.

If you have just recently gotten this ball python, give him his space for a week. Change his water and mist the cage, but for the most part, leave him alone. At the end of the first week, you can try to feed him, but don't be surprised if he refuses food. Handle him for less than 30 minutes a day for the second week, and increase the time slowly each week. It helps to handle him at night when he's most active. During the second or third week he may take food. However, ball pythons are notorious for being fussy eaters. Just offer food once a week, whether or not he accepts. The object is to develop a routine with him.

Patience is the key. Snakes don't view time in the same way you do. For them, everything is much slower.

Good luck!

I'm glad to hear you have a ball. if you just got the ball make sure you leave him alone, he needs to feel that he is safe there. give him about 2-3 days and do not touch him at all because what can happen is that he well not eat later on trust me on this. what even better is to leave him alone till his first feeding and then when ever you see him out of he cave handle him, and if he bits remember never ever shake him off because you will break or take out his teeth. take good of snaky

Ok, well first off I have had several pythons and the best thing is don't be afraid of him and just be relaxed and calm when holding him. Try to spend as much time as you can handling him and keep it up daily.. As time goes on he will become more used to you and be alittle more social. When you spend time with him.. try doing normal activities. I let mine wrap around my neck or wrist when I am walking around the house and even driving on a warm day.
Best of luck

Rain S is correct. Handle your snake a little each day and he will make a wonderful pet. Just remember to always be gentle with him. If he should strike or bite you at first, don't worry or freak out. He won't hurt you. He will get used to you. The key is gentle handling! Jim

Make sure he has a warm enviornment when pulling him out of his cage. Body temperature is very important. Sorry to break it to you also reptiles rarely show signs of getting comfortable to people.

aww...he's just a shy little guy. most balls are pretty shy unless they get handled regularly. try to handle him for short periods of time ever day (except when he just ate, then wait a few days). he won't get braver unless he feels comfortable with you.

good luck.
