Now that I'm in my mid 40s I have been going down the merged road and it's quickly become a one lane country road!

The metaphor eludes me.
A merged road is an intersection.
Personally I think I am heading for a highway with or without traffic.

Definitely an intersection. It has lots of speed bumps before I can even get to the intersection. Good analogy.
