Why did Hamilton believe that the federal government should pay the states war debts as well as it’s own? Why did some states object?

Hamilton believed that in the federalist chariot, meaning that if all the states paid taxes it would strengthen the power of the federal government and supersede it above state authority.

Southern states rejected this because in their eyes, they were shouldering in tax burdens to states like Massachusetts that had amassed a huge debt from of the war.

Anti-federalists and state sovereignty sympathizers also viewed this as reminiscent of monarchial tryanny that had previously taxed them. They felt that they were under-represented especially since most people who vote came from either the landed or commercial gentry.
