i only ignore people i know for a fact are cokeheads or are trying to pick a fight with me, etc.

Unless they are making you angry, you should not ignore them as it is rather disrespectful and of course if you want respect you must first give it. I mean someday if you aren't already, you may get married and would you like to talk to your significant other and he just ignore you? Put yourself in others shoes and know how it feels and you may just change your attitude about things.
