I just bought a wireless router. My modem is connected to my desktop via USB but there is an Ethernet port as well. For my wireless router I have to connect my modem through my Ethernet port. But every time I do I lose my net. What can I do?

I'm confused by the phraseology of your question but let me give you a little insight into your modem and the wireless router you have.

I'm guessing you have a broadband connection that goes into the WAN port of your wireless router. You then plug your ethernet cable into the back of the laptop and the other end into the ethernet ports on the back of the router. But you've missed a step. Your internet connection with the wireless modem probably wasn't set up on your router.

Check your directions for the web address you need to go to to setup your router. Typically it will be something like 192.168.1.1
and ask for a login which will be listed in the router's documentation.
Follow the simple steps in your manual or on the router's manufacturer website to configure your router to provide a DHCP service for your laptop. This will let you share your internet connection. good luck.

Turn off the modem. Unplug it's USB cable from the back of the modem AND your PC.

Plug the ethernet cable into the modem and then plug the other end into the "Link" port on the Router. Power up the modem, and then when the modem is finished connecting, power up the Router.

Now follow the instructions that came with your wireless adapter and install it to your PC. Don't forget to setup some kind of security on your wireless router, it's pretty simple and should be located in the instructions for the router.

connect your modems ethernet port to the routers WAN (internet) port. then connect your computer to one of the ethernet ports on the router. open your browser and type 192.168.0.1
and go into the routers setup wizard. If there is no wizard then just goto your internet settings and pick connection to the internet is dynamic ip, used mostly by cable ISP's.

save the settings and that should allow you to access the internet.

You need a CAT5 or 6 cable. It looks similar to a telephone wire. The cable should plug into your modem and then into wireless router. Lengths vary from about 2 feet to 75 or more depending where you want to put your router. Cost is usually a few dollars if you buy at an online computer store to probably 25 dollars at a bestbuy or similar. takes 30 seconds to complete.

It sounds like you only pooched your Internet settings. When you set up the router, the desktop is looking to it for the Internet connection, not the modem. At worst, you need to disable the router connection (in the software) before you can dial out with the modem. The USB part has nothing to do with it.

First goto http://192.168.1.254 in your browser.
Set your modem to bridged mode (generally located in connections tab or advanced __> connections tab)

Unplug your USB cable - Throw it in a drawer somewhere or for a printer :-)

Connect one end of the ethernet cable to your modem and the other the the WAN port on your wireless router.

Plug an ethernet cable to the number 1 spot on your wireless router and the other end to your computer.

now type http://192.168.1.254 in your browser or refer to the paper that came with your new router.

setup your wireless router for what password you choose and remember your password.
