As for when you will start your period, that varies from woman to woman. Some women report practically non-existent periods and others bleed harder and more frequently; everyone responds differently. The pros to the shot is you only have to think about bc once every three months (as opposed to taking a pill everyday) and you can't screw it up (like forgetting to take your pill) unless you miss your appointment. Some women do not respond well to the shot (nausea, weight gain, etc), but they don't have those kinds of problems with the pill. Both are hormone-based methods so they are not without risk. Do not use any hormone method (shot, pill, patch) if you are a smoker. Both carry risks that are raised exponentially if you smoke. And, as a health educator, I must add that neither offers any protection from STDs (a mute point if you are involved in a without-a-doubt monogamous relationship with someone who has been tested and is clear of any infection). Hope this helps!!

While I was researching this, I found this paragraph on the shot. This method is reliable 97-99% or more. A shot (hormonal injection of Depo Provera) is given every three months to prevent the ovaries from releasing an egg. It also changes the lining of the uterus (womb).Safe and effective and simple to use. Women usually have no menstrual periods while getting the injections. It is safe for breastfeeding mothers. Commonly causes irregular bleeding. Possible side effects include weight gain, headaches, or mood changes. No protection against sexually transmitted disease and HIV .

This is site gives a good break down of contraceptives and the different types. Please give a read if you plan on gettin busy.

I've been on the shot for almost 3 months now. The good thing about it is that I don't get my period anymore. My doctor suggested I take it because I'm not good at remembering to take the pill and I'm skinny and the shot helps you gain weight. So far the shot has actually made me lose weight, and I'm not so happy about that because I'm already too little for my age. And sometimes I get bladder infections for a few days. I'm always tired and sometimes moody. But the effects vary from person to person.

The shot has serious side effects and can cause you to become ill. I had an online friend that was ill for over a year and had every test imaginable done and they couldn't find anything wrong with her. She had all she could do to get from the bed to the couch some days. It wasn't utill I sent her husband some articles from women who had being battling severe problems after using the shot that was able to get help. She showed the info to her doctor and her doc was like "if only I had known". I personally do not recommend the shot.

about depo provera (the shot) see http://www.fwhc.org/birth-control/bcdepo.htm and the pill http://www.fwhc.org/birth-control/thepill.htm and http://www.fwhc.org/birth-control/continual-hormones.htm

i think it's much better to use the pill because the shot has no estrogen and the shot is not recommended if you want to have a baby soon, and it may risk you to have osteoporosis and not recommended for long term use.also some have allergic reaction to depo, and i've read horror stories about it, that women become sick even if they stop using it and almost died. (sorry i forgot the site, but you may search it.)

My aunt got pregnant while on the depo shot. Be careful. It's makes your body believe that it's pregnant. So you should n't get a period. and also you WILL gain WEIGHT.

The shot can possibly make you have hair loss, weight gain, sporadic periods and spotting, and irritability. (My family doctor advised me not to get the shot, she doesn't like it healthwise.)

The pill is more reliable in the sense that you will know when you're going to get your period.
