If you take a look at recent past history, crime goes up when there is less than adequate education, above average unemployment, recession and lack of good paying jobs there is a marked increace in violent crimes. If I were in charge, I would enhance those areas, insure healthcare, make housing affordable, increase opportunities for home ownership, relax the gun laws( looking at statistics from the 1950-70's areas with increased crime prevailed where gun laws began to take affect). I would decrease interest rates on student loans, making sure students that represent the future had no debt starting out. Politicians should make sure that Americans, can afford food and clothing, were secure in their finances and employment. I would also make bankruptcy easier and a way of erasing pressing debt allowing people to start over. I would definitely abolish "Right To work States", they encourage poverty, put people out of work for no reason, and pay less. I think that is all everybody wants.

Only in America is it legal to own a gun without the knowledge nor social restraint to understand the consequences of that stupidity. Remove the means to cause violence would remove the majority of the aggression that drives the crimes in the first place.
Or
legalise Dope then people would be too stoned to shoot each other in the first place. Oh sorry, I forgot you tried that. It was called Vietnam wasn't it.

Make being a convicted violent felon more diffcult in prison. The whole country should take a tip from the sheriff of Maricopa county, AZ. Maricopa county has the lowest resitivism rate for violent crime of any county in the US because he treats violent offenders the way they should be treated.
In short, make being in prison for violent crime more difficult.

Criminals will not respond to consequences. They won't think "maybe I shouldn't do this because this may happen..."
If they thought that way they wouldn't be criminals in the first place!
I am all for locking them up and I don't think jail should be a nice place, but we need to rehabilitate these people before letting them back out on the street, and our current system doesn't do that.

We need to enforce the laws we have and violent criminals should receive the maximum penalty without early parole.
If you execute murderers and give rapists & child molestors life in prison, you would clean up a lot.
People who were thinking of commiting crimes would think twice if they knew the punishment was tough.
Petty criminals should get the 3 strikes rule. This would give them a chance to reform.

The most effective way is to remove the criminals from society. This gives them less opportunity and provides a deterent to those not in jail already. More police will not work if jail is a revovling door.

Pass pro-worker legislation, make college affordable, would be a start. If your not artificially oppressed--you can get that job that will knock you out of poverty or the drug trade. Passing policies that stifle and individuals ability to succeed and repealing those that do are hopefully part of the new congresses agenda.

I think we need to be able to enforce the laws that we have. Including being tougher on drugs and drug related crime. I think police officers hands are tied by the courts. I also think people need to start taking responsibility for their actions instead of blaming everything that goes wrong in their lives on other people.

My thought is this: they are not interested in imposing laws to reduce crime in U.S., they are too damn busy advocating violence in other country's to pay attention to their own!
