Got a computer built for me in Vancouver, late Sept. 05, all new parts. It gave out late October of 06. Any idea on warranty for the hard drive? Because my system itself only had a 1 yr warranty; I was hoping the drive might have a longer one if I go through Samsung??

well, you might be able to save data from it still. First, stop trying to use the drive or you can render it dead. Wait to use it until you have another hard drive to move your files to.

Once you have the second hard drive installed and formated then go to gibson research website and buy Spinrite 6.
You won't be sorry, its a lifesaver.

Use a friends computer to create a boot disk with it or an ISO for a CD or a USB drive and then run the utility on your computer.
After all is done, try to boot again and focus on moving all necessary files you can save to the other hard drive. If it won't boot anymore, try safe mode. If that doesn't work then you have to use dos commands, yes its mundane but it will help you save files.

The reading head is stuck in "park". Park is the inital position of the reading head when the drive is OFF. When it powers up and the head tries to move to read data off the plates in the drive its physically forced back to "park" resulting in the clicking noise. More than likely the drive is physically damaged for good and the data is lost. But in rare cases I've been able to get the head unstuck from park by dropping it a couple times onto a hard surface from about 3 feet which allowed me to copy the data off of it before throwing the drive away. ***Be aware that by dropping it in this manner will void the warrenty if there is any left and it won't work for much longer. Check with Samsung on the warranty for the drive first.

Did you register the drive with Samsung upon rebuild? I register with every manufacturer of hardware and software in the event something like that happens. I was able to get two free hard drives from Western Digital. Without paperwork to show install and use dates you may be out of luck. Also keep in mind some hard drive manufacturers count shelf time as part of the warranty period.

Most hard drives have anywhere from 1 - 3 years warranty. Check out Samsung's website to see if yours is still warranteed.
