No one knows, exactly. The number is constantly
changing. The current spider catalog lists about
35,000 different species. In one year that I
checked about 650 newly discovered species were described and named. At the same time it
is often found that different people have given
several names to what is actually only one species.
This is especially so if the spider has a very wide
distribution. When this is discovered the excess
names are synonymized and the number of species is reduced.

There are so few people working with spiders, and
some of them are from such rarely visited areas
that there are species that have never been seen
again (or at least never reported) for over one
hundred years. This makes it very difficult to know
whether there really is such a species, different
from all others.
