Having working in the pharmaceutical distribution side of the business for 15 years, I would try work at both a chain and then an independent pharmacy. See which one you like best. Definitely network with other RPh's at your state's pharmacy association meetings (there should be owners looking to retire).

Another good resource would be your sales representative from your drug wholesaler (i.e. Amerisource, McKesson, Cardinal, etc.). They will definitely know of owners who would like to sell.

I am glad to hear you are looking at pursuing owning your own pharmacy!! My mother owned 2 pharmacies in MN before selling to my brother, whose niece is now attending pharmacy school.

You'll hear alot about the "gloom and doom" of the small independent pharmacy, but talk to some of your fellow classmates who may have worked at a chain (i.e. "pill mill") and you'll be glad you're striking out on your own.

work for someone else for a while. Learn how to run a Pharmacy while getting paid, rather than doing it fresh out of school and ending up broke before you even got started.

Independent Pharmacies must fill some niche it seem s in order to survive. Even if you are in a small-town, eventually Big-Box Mart shows up and you are dead.

Easiest thing to do is to contact current owners of an independent pharmacy who want to retire and buy them out. Contact the independent pharmacist associations, and they will put you in touch with the right people.

i am only a tech, but I would probably try to contact to Board of Pharmacy or maybe the Small Business Adminstration. If you want to buy a chain store, contact one of the other owners. Maybe this helps.

Personally I think they are trying to scare you. But I agree, talk to a lawyer.
