There were no stamps in 1798. The first stamp was issued by Great Britain on May 6, 1840. The first US stamps were issued July 1,1847. They are quite valuable.

Postage for a regular letter now costs 39c.

If it was used in 1798, it can be worth a lot. Today, in 2006, they still make 1cent stamps to cover people's old stamps from the 2cent increase hike.

If its in good quality and is made in 1798, keep it for a while, and the value will get higher.

Old stamps like that can be worth alot!!! It all depends on the condition of the stamp. If it hasnt been post marked, it is worth more. Is it on an envelope, or postcard? or is it by it self? Is the glue still on back of stamp, or has it dissolved? Many things are taken into effect in order to determine the value of an stamp..

Hope this helped
