I have this thing where if something happens to side of me, the same thing has to happen to the other. For example, if I touch something cold with one hand, I have to touch it with the other hand. If I hit one hand, I have to inflict the same pain on the other. If I step on a carpet with one foot, I have to step on the carpet with the other. And the worst is when someone touches one arm, and I either ask them to touch the other arm in the same spot or quickly touch that spot on both arms with another object. It's messed up. I hate it. It's not that I think something bad is going to happen if I don't do these things. And sometimes I think it is maybe an obsession with symmetry, but I part my hair on the side and that doesn't seem to bother me! Any idea what my deal is? Any suggestions for help?

As far as I know, it is not really OCD because I don't do these things to relieve stress or prevent something bad happening. I do these things because my arms or legs or whatev feel really weird if I don't.

It is a slight form of OCD. There are different types and levels for different people. The only way to stop is to physically force yourself in full consciousness NOT to allow yourself to do these things. Its a VERY stressfull remedy but its the only thing that works. Some try hypnotism, some try meds, and some just come to terms with it and dont care what anybody else says or thinks. Thats all up to you. I do have a stronger form of OCD some of my habits I managed to stop others I just live with. Like vacuuming the carpet all in one direction, cleaning the canister and filters, then vacuuming in the opposite direction...I repeat this up and down then east to west then diagonal in one direction and diagonal in the other from the opposit corner. Then I do it up and down just to make sure its all uniform, by that time I dont have to clean the filter or canister, and I am not satisfied until the filter and canister are clean after vacuuming the room. Your not hurting yourself or anyone else. Commit to stop or live with it. Its up to you.

I had that, andit somewhat bothered me. Me personally it was primarily a nervous tick, something I could do to to occupy myself, and feel connected, like I had atleas some kind of purpose. Yeh I grew up extremely shy and low self esteem.
What ever it is if it bothers you or what ever, its no big deal, it is just energy, what you are doing is being selfish with your energy and all your thoughts by keeping these things for yourself. It seems like a release for interaction with out the hassle of dealing with other people. It really bothered me and i thought it was dumb to do, I would say hmminteresting there it is again, andconsciously not complete the obsession what my reaction was.
For me it was simply my fingers, if one finger rubbed against another, I had to rub all my fingers In the same way, its weird just thinking back about it.
Later in life what i learned about nerousness and ticks was really ground breaking , it is to recognize I was being was too self centered like I was the only person around. I consciously decided i wanted to make a change and not be self centered.
Be ready for your tick before it comes, turn it into a healthy habit, a smile, a stretch, give somebody a compliment, just be ready for it. thats how you rid your self of bad obsessions give your self a different reaction, realize when your negative action wants to take place, and brush on by, you control yourself. not some obsession(nervous tick).
Nice work!

It is OCD. You feel like there is no anxiety because you do it to the other side immediately afterwards, but try just doing it on one side and see what happens.
You probably need to see a doctor and either get some drugs or a psychiatrist and try to move past whatever it is that makes you feel like you have to do it.

It is OCD, just with out the anxiety part of it. I would either learn to live with it, or find a therapist you like.
