Because the Pharmacuetical Industry can't make money from natural substances.
And the 'war on drugs' is a good money making scam.

Cannabis prohibition laws are rooted in the racist testimony Harry Anslinger gave before Congress in the '30s, as well as the hysteria created by Hearst newspapers about "devil weed". They flat out fabricated stories to scare ignorant people into falling for another Prohibition scam.
Just because it's natural doesn't mean it's better than man-made drugs. I like LSD, and it's a man-made molecule, synthesized by Hoffman in 1943. Cannabis is less physically and psychologically harmful than alcohol and tobacco, and it doesn't even need to be smoked in order to feel the effects. Brownies or tea, anyone?
RevKev: Amsterdam is verifiable proof that cannabis legalization will NOT create long-term increased usage. In fact, the numbers out of Holland show that cannabis usage overall DROPPED, and separating cannabis from hard drugs drew people(especially minors) away from junk like cocaine and heroin. We the People should demand immediate legalization and mandatory cannabis ingestion for all elected officials.

Well, simply because it has 1000 legal uses and one illegal one. That illegal one is the one the government pretends to focus on, but really they're focusing on the other 1000. Simply because Hemp fibers are very good replacement for cotton. So if hemp is legalised then the cotton farmers lose alot of money.

Our two main legal recreational drugs (alcohol and niccotene) are responsible for a larger number of deaths than the illegal ones. The more drugs we legalize, the worse this situation will become. As far as the "its natural" argument, arsenic can be found naturally, but I'm staying away from it, too. The biggest lie anyone has bought it that anything natural is good or healthy.

Because the powers that be cannot get through their thick skulls that just because something is illegal, doesn't,t make it go away. I don't believe in laws designed to protect people from themselves. They only make things worse. RevKev didn't mention the number of people that died or went blind from bad alcohol when it was illegal. Even the people that wanted alcohol illegal to begin with were forced to admit that prohibition didn't work.
