I had an abusive boss years ago. It's a difficult situation. You have to be respectful but stand your ground. When you are abused, let the abuser know that you consider it abuse. Explain why it is wrong. Do your job and find a new one as soon as possible. Learn what you can while on this job and make the most of your time there. Be loyal to the company and its customers. Unfortunately, my abusive boss was an owner and there was not much I could do about it.

Does your boss have a boss or is he the owner of your business? If your boss has someone above him, ask to have a meeting with your boss and his boss and tell them you will not tolerate being mistreated. Do you have an HR department? That could be another option.

However, if your boss is the business owner, you can try to reason with him and express your unhappiness with how he communicates with you. If he is even part human, he'll tone it down. If he's not, be just as nasty right back and collect unemployment when you get fired. DON'T QUIT. You have no recourse if you quit.

Been there; done that. Document it! Document exactly what he says when, keeps journals of the time and date. Keeps copies of everything you have done for the company and then quit and sue his ...! The only way you can do that is with proof. If he emails you rudely like mine did, keep a copy of it. If he leaves rude messages, dont delete them. Note everything and keep all your work because the only defense he is going to use in the end is that you were not a good worker, if you keep copies of the stuff you did, he won't be able to use that as a defence. Trust me, he will find everything that you didnt do right and use that to discredit you, so the best offence is a good defence. I did it, I won and now I am my own boss.

Manage your own negative emotions regarding your boss's behavior so that you don't engage in self-defeating behavior (e.g. stonewalling, or counterattacking your boss). Once you understand and have managed your own negative reactions, work to communicate your concerns as long as they are framed in a helpful, positive manner, thereby creating an atmosphere for problem resolution. You should discuss your concerns — not confront your boss. There is a difference. You need to carry out the discussion of your concerns in a non-adversarial way. Like a marriage, you should try to handle your complaints in a manner that does not do further damage to your relationship.

Also, try to see the criticism as valuable information about how to do better, not as a personal attack. Try to separate your personal ego from your business persona. Try hard to control your impulses to react emotionally or defensively. Try to see the criticism as an opportunity to work together with your boss on a development plan. See yourself as a partner with your boss on this plan, rather than as a victim of a power struggle.

Go to the unemployment office and tell them what it is like working for him and ask him if you are entitled to unemployment and could they help you find another job and if they do, tell this boss good bye and walk out. Don't give any notice.

Tell him you don't like the way he talks to you and that you feel it is harassment. If he continues you can take him to court and clean out his business.

Or you could put your tail between your legs and find another job.

Join the Air Force! Never use that place as a reference!

Join, never look back, don't even ask for the last pay!

No good bye, no I quit.
