During the 1828 election, his opponents referred to him as a "Jackass." Jackson liked the name and used the jackass as a symbol for a while, but it died out. However, it later became the symbol for the Democratic Party

Andy G is correct. Andrew Jackson used a slogan used against him, that he was a jackass, and turned it into his political symbol. Talk about free publicity.

Yes, democrats are the party of jackasses but at least they respect the poor and minorities and gays.
Republicans, though, are the party of mindless elephants stampeding over America, defecating on it with their gigantic turds wherever they walk.
