First add 5/6 to each side of the equation. This gives

-5/48 +5/6 = 5/6 + -5/6 + 5/16x
-5/48 + 5/6 = 5/16x
Then add the fractions on the left side by finding a common denominator of 48
-5/48 +40/48 = 5/16 x
35/48 = 5/16x
Then multiply each side by 16
560/48 =5x
Then divide each side by 5
560/240= x
or x = 7/3

It is not a good way to write 5/16x because it can be read as 5/(16x) or (5/16)x. We don't know whether x is the denominator or the numerator.

Assume x is the numerator:

-5/48 = -5/6 + (5/16)x

-5/48 + 5/6 = (5/16)x , collected constant term in one side

35/48 = (5/16)x, added the two constant terms

x = 7/3, canceled factors of 5 and 16.

----------------
If somehow x is the denominator, then
x = 3/7. Can you explain why?

First - convert all fracxtions to the Least Common Denominator, which is 48: -5/6 is multiplied by 8/8, while 5/16 is multiplied by 3/3. The problem becomes

-5/48 = -40/48 + 15/48x

(I am assuming that 5/16 is a fraction multiplyng x)

Next, multiply both sides by 48, which will remove the denominators, making the problem look like this:

-5 = -40 + 15x

Now, add both 40 to both sides ---- 35 = 15x
Then, divide both sides by 15 -------- 35/15 = x
reduce the fraction --------------------- 7/5 = x

Multiply both sides by 48 to get rid of the fractions:
48(-5/48)=48(-5/6+5/16x)
-5=-40+15x

Add 40 from both sides:
15x=35
x=35/15=7/3

Check:
-5/48=-5/6+5/16(7/3)
-5/48=-40/48+35/48
-5/48=-5/48

preichwein, you need to check your answer there!

Follow the same steps as before:

-5/48 = -40/48 + 15/48x

-5/48 - -40/48 = -40/48 - -40/48 + 15/48x (remember, subtracting negatives means adding positives)

35/48 = 15/48x

(35/48) / (15/48) = (15/48x) / (15/48)

Also, remember that dividing by a fraction is the same as multiplying by it's reciprocal (the fraction flipped)

(35/48) * (48/15) = x

Reduce your fractions, the way I showed you in your previous problem:

x = (7/1) * (1/3)

x = 7/3

x = 2 1/3

Check your work:

-5/48 = -5/6 + (5/16)*(7/3)

-5/48 = -40/48 + 35/48

-5/48 = -5/48 <--- True
