Multiply both sides by 40 to get rid of the fractions:
40(7/8x-9/10)=40(-1/8)
35x-36=-5

Add 36 from both sides:
35x=31

Divide 35 from both sides:
x=31/35

Check:
7/8(31/35)-9/10=-1/8
31/40-9/10=-1/8
31/40-36/40=-1/8
-5/40=-1/8
-1/8=-1/8

a. Eliminate fractions > multiply the denominators by everything:

(8)(10)(x)(7/8x) - (8)(10)(x)(9/10) = (8)(10)(x)

First: cancel "like" terms > combine remaining terms >

(10)(7) - (8)(x)(9) = (8)(10)(x)
70 - 72x = 80x

Sec: solve for "x" and keep it on one side > add 72x to both sides:

70 - 72x + 72x = 80x + 72x
70 = 152x

Third: divide both sides by 152x >

70/152 = 152x/152
70/152 = x; x = 70/152

Simplify 70/152, if possible.
