so how can i backup in case my flash drive stops working if the back up is within the drive itself then?

whoever told you to do that should be scolded! Never use a USB drive as a long term storage solution. It is only meant to be temporary and mainly for transferring files. You should back it up to a computer by copying the entire contents to somewhere like "my documents" or you can create a zip file of the contents of your drive and try to save them in your email. To backup on the same drive is putting all your eggs in one basket.

In case of a PC crash, a backup is only good if it is stored on some other device. I use flashdrives for backups and have an external hard drive on my wish list.

Its sounds like you are doing something wrong. Either copy the backup file onto your harddrive or get a compression program such as PKZip or WinZip to make an archive onto your harddrive.

You cant! Who told you to back your flash drive up on itself? Sounds like they aint too brite! Back it up on your PC!
