Our power goes out quite a bit and sometimes his water drops 10-20 degrees because his warmer lamp shuts off. He warms back up gradually, but will it hurt him over time?

Thanks for all the input. I will have you know, I care very much for my fish (as crazy as that sounds). He's the coolest little guy. I have a thermometer in his tank and keep it btwn 73-75. I had someone watch him at work once and I came back and his tank was around 58!!! I was so mad, but he seems to be fine. Can they recognize the sound of your voice, by any chance? :)

Some fish die as a hobby.
Other fish can survive nearly everything.
But yeah, you should avoid temperature fluctuations if at all possible.

Yes, temp fluctuations even 3-4 degrees are harmful, I can't imagine how bad a 10-20 degree drop is.

Is there some sort of battery-powered heat source you could use for your betta? Even puttung a flashlight over the tank will help. Not much, but it may at least keep it from dropping quite so fast.

Keep in mind 3 things:

1) rapid change, even good change, is bad.
2)Water cools slower than you think.
3)More water you have the slower it cools.

Are you sure he is dropping 10-20 degrees? How fast? (more than a couple of degrees per hour is bad.) How cold is he getting? (75-85 is the good range, below 70 is bad, below 65 is dead betta time)

Technically yes as was said. However, I have had Beta, and put them through the ringer. I have left them in sunspots in the summer and in really cold rooms in the winter. Not to mention really dirty water. They happen to be very hardy fish. You can feed em too much, or forget to feed em for a couple days, and they look just fine. They make great college fish. (I do feel bad I took such bad care like this....but I mean, he lived forever.)

yes that is a huge drastic drop and will be very harmful to any fish, not just betta. You are lucky that your betta is still alive. See if you can find some battery powered heating lamps.

Temperature fluctuations cause stress for your fish. I suggest keeping your tank at room temperature. My bettas do quite well without a heater and I keep my house at 72 degrees.

That is a serious shock for it. Do you feel the temp drop when it goes Down 20 degrees...yes you do and Betas are in water so its a bigger shock...keep it constant
