If you can see the fry's eye spots in the mother's gravid spot, the fry will be along very soon. It's not good to leave the female in the breeding trap too long, how ever it's also not good to move or net the female too close to the birthing either. A separate, small heavily planted tank is a much better method, the female will not be able to eat as many of her young, and she can be placed in the auxillary tank as soon as the gravid spot begins to show, thereby reducing the stress on her. Female livebearers will die if they are moved to near their due date,so it's not a good idea to buy a really fat one. Good luck to you and your guppy. Hope this helps. PeeTee

I left a female guppy in a breeding box for almost a week once... she had eyes in her stomach but refused to have them. She ended up perfectly with 40+ babies. I also had another in a breeding box for 2 days 3 nights. She had 8 babies. Recently, I noticed a fat female guppy. I moved her too early. She had 5 babies and about 5 unhatched eggs. The babies are perfectly fine, though.

He 'birth canal' might be a tube her babies come out? Well, it is at the back of her stomach at the end of the gravid spot. Normally the guppy it rounded, usually during birth it will see like it is straight with her belly, not curved up... if you can understand. So far with the breeidng boxes I've been lucky. I also keep records.

As mentioned, keeping the female in a breeding box is stressful (not to mention if you keep feeding her in there, all the extra flakes will junk up the thing) but a way to tell if she's REALLY close to having the fry is if her belly looks "squared" off instead of rounded. It might be hard to tell on some, but for the mollies and guppies I've had, right about the day before their belly gets all rectangular shaped.

I would leave her out of the breeding box until she starts having fry. Those breeding boxes are very stressful to guppies because they are so small. Due to the stress she may hold in the babies longer than she should, which is OK for the fry but could end up killing the mother. But if she goes into labor before you put her in there, she should be safe.

I'd take her out of the box. You didn't mention if she was with in a tank with other guppies or not. If there isn't any other fish, you can leave her in her original tank. She generally won't eat anything for a day or so after she has the fry. I'd consider buying some java moss or breeding grass to put in your tank if you are concerned about the other fish eating the babies.
