There's this crazy man I always see in my building though I know he doesnt live here. He visits the guy across the hall from me that I dont know well at all, just his name. He seems nice but this guy is weird. He has a few friends in my building. When I first moved in I caught him at 6am standing outside my apartment door. I am very tiny but dont intimidate easily, I stared him down and he never did anything but he had the look in his eyes that if I had of shown weakness he would have done something to me. Today I got into the elevator and he was there, I live alone. There were two others in there and this guy refered to me by name and asked if he could come use my phone. Of course I said Hell no, but it kind of worried me. Since he hasnt touched me or been inappropriate yet I cant complain much to anyone but I am a bit scared. What can I do to stay safe from this creep? I just have a bad feeling about him and it makes me fearful.

Wow, what a creepy situation! I would be afraid if I were you too.
You should make sure you keep your door locked as much as possible. See about getting extra locks installed on your door. Check your lease and see if you can add them yourself. If you are allowed to have a dog in your apartment, I would seriously consider getting one. Since he hasn't actually done anything you can't do anything as far as the police but keep an eye on him and the second he does something call 911.
Think about taking some self defense classes too. Never know when you might need them. Also, try talking to your landlord. Explain to him exactly why you are freaked out by this guy. Someone said above in writing and keep a copy, that sounds like a great idea. If you have any big, intimidating guy friends ask them to come to your apartment and if the guy is there tell him to back off. Have the friend say he's your boyfriend or brother. Might be what he needs to hear to back off. It will make him think your not alone.
I wish I could be of more help. I wish you the best of luck and I hope this guy never does anything.

First of all, I would ask the manager of the building if he knows this person. Tell him you found him at your door early in the morning and are fearful of him. If he doesn't know him, try to find someone who can tell you about whether he is dangerous. I believe strongly in following your intuition because it's often on target and it's always better to be safe than sorry. The fact that he knows your name is another concern. How would he know this and why? Has he been asking about you? It would be a good idea to tell the police about your concern. They could check him out with the people in the building that he visits. Also, avoid getting into an elevator with him. If you see him as you leave your apartment, return to your apartment and lock the door. Carry mace, wear a rape whistle, and always be on guard. It's always better to be more careful than necessary rather than taking any chances. Don't be concerned about what others may think about you having this man checked out. It's your life you're protecting.

A previous responce said to report it to the landlord. Do that! And back it up in with a letter and copy the letter to your local Law inforcement head. If you copy the letter to the local police force you will be surprised how fast your landlord will respond. I know...I'm a landlord.

Also please understand that the police don't prevent crime, they only clean up the mess afterwards. That's been backed up by several Supream Court rulings. They are not obliged to protect you. The "protect and serve" on the cars is bull.

So consider a weapon as well. Pepper spray is pretty good if you always have it on hand...say on your key chain, and there are other weapons that can be fit onto a key chain. A local gun shop can introduce you to those even if you're not comfortable or licsenced to carry a gun. And always keep those keys in your hand when you feel like you might get into a dangourous situation.

You could always do what I have done. I used to live in a really dangerous neighborhood. I acquired a pistol and hung a sign on my front door that said"my pistol is faster than your 9-1-1-".. Didn't have any problems while living there.
Amazing Huh?
btw, I am licensed to carry a concealed weapon :-)

oh by the way, I would tell him to use his"friends" phone across the hall if he needs to make a call!

tell your landlord make this known. keep your doors locked. do not get into a routine of the same time leaving the house each day or going to take out garbage.. predators/ killers look for patterns.. of your lifestyle.. also talk to the police or even call them to come over under a fictitious name and say you live in building and know everyone there and this man comes inside and you think he may be a vagrant or a wino etc and please check it out.. make the call quietly.. tho turn on a TV make sure you lock the door so he hears it and not just once do it many times so he thinks you have many locks..also get pepper spray.. and at radio shack they have those alarms that go off when you open a door or at least the sounds of one so hit it when you walk into the door to let it go off.. but report it to least the landlord and cops.. its your duty.. and don't be threatened to move just yet. do not wear sexy clothes going out or coming in be covered ..get a HUGE dog.

First of all, I'd notify the super. Then you need to try and have a friend or two over as much as possible until the situation gets better. Unfortunately, you can't take any legal action against him until he actually does something. Just carry something for protection like pepper spray and avoid him as much as possible.

Get yourself a taser. They have ones that come with a lanyard that you can put around your wrist, so if he somehow gets it away from you, the lanyard pops out of the bottom and it works as a kill switch. This is helpful since he won't be able to use it against you. If the place you live is cold enough to warrent a jacket, you can carry it in your hand up the sleeve of your jacket on the way from your door to the car.

Talk to the landlord. Tell him exactly what you told us, in writing. Keep a copy and make sure the landlord knows that you have one and if anything happens you can use it as proof that he knew of a problem with this guy and did nothing. Landlords have a say over visitors in the building. Times, noise levels, parking, etc

Christian right here. in no way examine the Bible. the desire for God is written contained in the human heart, not in a e book. There are over 50 diverse variations of the Bible in English on my own, all claiming to be the only real Bible of the understand God, and that i'm not concerning diverse translations. some Bibles have manipulated Scripture. Others have extra "Scripture". some Bibles have deleted Scripture. even as others are corrupt. I belong to the Church prevalent by Christ on the starting up position of the Apostles, which change into responsible for discerning which writings were to be coated contained in the record of the Sacred Books. this complete record is termed the Canon of Scripture.

Have you told the manager and called the police? And do you carry mace and know some self defense? Maybe consider taking a self defense class? And of course you always move if it got to outta hand. Who says you can't complain?
