Fhange all fractions to least common denominator first and convert compound fractions to simple fractions. In this case the LCD is 42, because all the other denominators can be divided into 42. This makes adding your fractions easier. But you must also multiply the dividend (the top number) by the same number that you multiply by the denominator (the bottom number) to get 42:
15/42 + 12/42x = 47/42
Make sense? Now isolate x by performing the same functions to each side, where the numbers on one side will cancel each other out while moving to the other side, as in the following:
15/42 - 15/42 +12/42x = 47/42 - 15/42,
12/42x = 32/42,
(12/42x) / (12/42) = (32/42) / (12/42)
Dividing by a fraction is the same as multiplying by its reciprocal:
x = (32/42) * (42/12)
You can simplify as much as possible before doing the work:
x = (16/21) * (7/2),
x = 112/42
reduce again (see below for another reduction method):
x = 8/3
Convert to compound fraction:
x = 2 â
To check the work:
5/14 + 2/7(8/3) = 47/42
5/14 + 16/21 = 47/42
15/42 + 32/42 = 47/42
47/42 = 47/42
Another reduction method: â
x = (32/42) * (42/12)
When multiplying fractions together, you can also reduce between the dividend of one fraction (the top number) and the divisor (or denominator) of the other (the bottom number):
32
î ºî º
42 â here
*
42 â and here
î ºî º
12
You can do this between the two 42's and also with the 32 and the 12, like so:
(32/42) * (42/12) =
(32/1) * (1/12) =
(8/1) * (1/3) =
8/3 =
2 â
Understand?
I didn't just want to show you the work. I wanted to show you the method that makes the hard part of this question a little easier. I hope it helped!!!

(5/14)+(2/7)x=1 5/42
Find the Lowest Common Denominator
15/42+(12/42)x=47/42
Subtract 15/42 from both sides
(12/42)x=32/42
Multiply by 42
12x=32
Divide by 12
x=32/12
Simplify
x=8/3

5/14 + 2/7x = 1 5/42
LCM(14, 7, 42) = 42
15 + 12x = 47
12x = 47 - 15
x = 32/12 = 8/3

5/14+2/7x=47/42
Multiply both sides by 42 to get rid of the fractions:
42(5/14+2/7x)=42(47/42)
15+12x=47
Subtract 15 from both sides:
12x=32
Divide 12 from both sides:
x=32/12=8/3
Check:
5/14+2/7(8/3)=47/42
5/14+16/21=47/42
15/42+32/42=47/42
47/42=47/42

5/14 + (2/7)x = 1 5/42
Multiply through by 42 (LCM):
15 + 12x = 42 + 5
12x = 32
x = 32/12 = 8/3
5/14 + 2/(7x) = 1 5/42
Multiply through by 42x (LCM):
15x + 12 = 42x + 5x
32x = 12
x = 12/32 = 3/8
