How'd you use your head?
I squat, put my hands between my legs, lean forward a bit, and then push my arms outward.

Hmm...this is a hard question to answer because to be honest with you, the sensation you experience is what I experience now when I do handstands, too.

I suggest you keep practicing, but perhaps going forward with a "spotter" - someone to hold your legs. With less support from the wall, your body will be forced to support itself in the handstand position (as stiff and straight as a board and long and tall) instead of relying on the wall and you will learn more quickly how to perform the stunt. Have the spotter gradually support you less and less until you've got it down.

The key muscles in supporting your body in a handstand are your upper body muscles (shoulders, arms, and neck) but most especially your core (abs). Do some exercises to strengthen those areas; a good one is to lie on your back and lift your legs off the floor with your arms overhead and squeezing your ears. When you accomplish this, try rocking back and forth from head-to-toe, but remaining as stiff as a board. This is a tough one to master because it requires a lot of strength, but trust me, it'll help with your handstand!
