Biodiversity is directly related to the health of an ecosystem. As conditions of an ecosystem decline, species that are unable to adapt to the changes die off.

As some species die off, the species that rely on them (for food, shelter, pollination, locomotion, reproduction etc.) also decline or die if they cannot adapt to the changes.

I don't know that there is any particular importance
to it, it's just part of human beings' drive to know as
much as possible about everything.

From a practical standpoint, however, it is of some
importance, if we want to save as much of the
biodiversity as possible, to know which parts of
the world contain the most diversity per unit area.
Since we seem to insist on breeding like rats and
destroying the habitat for other organisms we must
know where we can invest our time, effort and
money to best advantage, saving as much of the
diversity as we can.
