Polyamory and paganism are not dependent on each other. I know many pagans who are monogamous, and many poly people who are not pagan (including Christians). There is a lot of overlap between the two subcultures, but they're not one and the same.
As for any ancient laws, there aren't any. I'm not sure if this is something you're just assuming, or if they're telling you some tall tale about "thee ancient Wytches ov Polyamory". People have always taken multiple partners, whether covertly or openly, throughout history. Most people are familiar with polygamy, a man having multiple wives, because that's the most common development in recent history. However, thanks to a more sex-positive culture, non-traditional relationships are becoming more acceptable.
As for me, I figure as long as everyone communicates and everything is consensual, people have a right to whatever type of relationship they wish. Straight, gay, or bi, monogamous or polyamorous, vanilla or BDSM-flavored--it's not my place to decide anyone's choices but my own. I do know from my own experiences that polyamory takes a lot more time and effort than I really have, but I know people who hare quite happy in their long-term poly relationships.
Oh, and as for the idea that most poly relationships fail? Well, so do most monogamous relationships, too. Think of how many people most monogamous people have to date before they find The One (and even then, look at the divorce/breakup rate).
Poly is tough, to be true, just because there are more people involved, which requires more communication adn time, but it can be done successfully.

Why not ? If it's not hurting no one and everyone in the group knows this going in... whats the harm. They are just having fun.
