One grandbaby is 13 1/2 months old and has olny lived outside of our home for maybe 2 whole months. The other baby is 9 months old has has lived here for 6 months. The parents totally believe that they should be able to claim their child on income tax when we have raised them and never asked for a penny and they have never offered. The oldest child lives in our home because of CPS. I think our children are being selfish and not thinking about us. Oh might I mention that my daughter and her baby lives with us. My son and his pregnant wife and baby lives with us. These are the kids not thinking of us only of themselves. Got any input?

Your children may be selfish, but you are nuts for letting them move in with you. Tell them to grow up and get their own lives and learn about birth control and then use it until they can afford to take care of the children they create. And no, you cannot claim your grandchildren on your tax returns. My guess is that your grown children who are busy producing other children they cannot support are all on welfare and Medicaid and food stamps and any other government program for the "won't works" which means a good portion of my salary also supports them. So can I claim them on my tax forms, too?

Unless there is a court document stating otherwise, if they have lived in your home for over 1/2 of the year, you can claim them. That is what the IRS looks at to the best of my knowledge. You may want to check the IRS website.

I dont want to be mean but, you raised some selfish children. You should claim the children, so you can keep the household going. Good Luck!

As long as you are providing 51 % of support. Housing costs, food, clothing, etc. It's in the IRS handbook.
