The sphinx is a part of the Ancient Egyptian history. It is one of the best known monuments on earth. It is still considered a remarkable attraction site for tourist. It was built during king Khafre's time, the owner of the 2nd biggest pyramid and it dates back to 45,000 years and is about 73.5 meters long. it is considered one of the largest single- stone statues in the world. The sphinx was sculptured of limestone and outcrop. It is said that the head of the sphinx depicts king Kafre while the body is that of a lion. Some say the head was meant to represent human intelegence while the body of a lion represents strength and power. However, the true purpose and meaning of the sphinx and what it resembles still remains a mystery as there is no inscriptions on it whatsoever that indicate why and what it was made for. A one meter wide nose is missing from the sphinx. It is presumed that it had been broken by a cannon ball fired by Napoleon's soldiers. Also, there are pieces of the sphinx's beard kept in the Egyptian and British museums.
I hope this assists you in your question and makes it clear why the Egyptian sphinx is so important as it has such a rich ancient history just like the pyramids of Giza

The sphinx was built by the ancient egyptians. In the modern days, it is a tourist attraction site. It reflects the culture Egypt has. Whenever people think of Egypt, they associate the pyramids and the sphinx to it. They are like the face of the country.

Archeologists think sphinx was built to gaurd the pyramids, others think it has treasures under it. Until now, no one knows. I personally consider it none of both I've heard but I consider it a human masterpiece-achievement which shows the ancient-Egypytian civilization power and advance. The sphinx' human head and lion body resemble its power and might. Oh it's really a work of art and innovation !
