Because they don't understand the meaning of the word hero.
Heroes as far as I'm concerned are Doctors, nurses, firemen, police, lifesavers, etc. and those who go out of their way to help others. Even though I was born here I thank god my parents didn't sit there and watch TV & sports programmes.
They encouraged us to play sports and to do your best without cheating after all sports was meant to be for fun, health & fitness & not how much you were paid. As for movie stars I am glad we never used them as role models and neither have my children. If my daughter acted like Paris Hilton I would be ashamed to admit that I was related to her.

because the australian media... not necessarily the people living there think that australia is this amazing transcedant place that everyone wants to visit. It sickens me to death how much coverage even pathetic big brother celebreties get. if a celebrity ever comes to Australia its like, wow, a celebrity loves it here so we have to give them everything they want... once again this is just predominantly media portrayal. As for soccer players, lets just all join the bandwagon shall we. Its amazing how many so many soccer fanatics there was literally over night during the world cup. Commercial tv in australia has lost all respectability in my eyes over the last couple of years.

How many Aussies do you know??
I doubt there are enough movie star and soccer
worshipers, to fill a bus.
Enjoying something or even being a fan of something,
is far from worship. Check your Webster's.

in general, i dont think we do. we dont really care. we see them as normal people. we definately dont have the paparazzi here like they do in the UK or US. (except that one guy who always harasses our nic).

as for soccer players, until all the world cup stuff happened last year, nobody cared at all. while world cup happened heaps of new fanatics popped up overnight. now that is has died down, not many people care again.
