The screw that holds the belt adjuster is stuck in the air conditioning pump but the pump is too expensive to replace. Is there anyway I can go around it by just getting rid of the pump and still have my car run?

Edit: We've tried a shorter belt but it doesnt fit. The machanic said I had to replace the air pump which is like $1200.

Stuck or broken off?
If it's stuck, you need patience and a plan.
WD-40, which should be carried in everyone's trunk, is needed.
.
If you were impatient andf the bolt broke, well....
If it's broken, it can be fixed but without me being there it's hard to describe what I would do to get the broken stub out.
You need a good mechanic to help you.
.
Yes you can run your car without the pump.
I'm assuming you intend to jury-rig a bracket to hold the Alternator?
Don't disconnect the pump! It's filled with pressurised freon and can cause serious injury.
You can carefully tie it out of the way untill you can afford to fix it.

use a string and wrap it around the path you intend to take with it and then lay it down and measure it. then go to a part store and tell them how many ribs serpentine belt or v-belt you need and the length you got from your string but remember if you run it around an automatic tensioner itll be all the way out so think about that. belts that are lets say 50 inch will be anywhere from 50-50.5inches. thats why if you have two belts that run on the same pulleys you have to ask for a match set so they will be the same size.

Just leave the pump alone. If you have a serpentine belt buy like 10 different size belts and see which one you can route around the A/C. If you have fan belts just remove the belt, hell your car may idle smoother now, except you wont have A/C.

There are serpentine kits that you can buy. They are not for the novice. you might be surprised how easily screws can get unstuck. Ask some of your friends or maybe the guys at the parts store. But yes your car can definitely run without the pump

i own a shop, and this will work if the belt is not going to hit anything,,but you might have to change the size of the belt also,,just check and see if the pump is making it clear anything that might chew a good belt up,,sometimes the route they run in,,keeps them from touching other parts that could wear them out,,good luck hope this help,s.
