The polyester briefs are treated during manufacturing to attract moisture away from the skin. Fabric softeners absorb onto the polyester surface and the fabric can no longer wick moisture away from the body. That's why the care label says not to use fabric softener

It is also believed that fabric softeners have a significant influence on the flammability of polyester. Destroying any non-flammable properties the polyester may have.

I know I'm probably not answering your question accurately but I wanted to let you know that most washing instructions do not have to be followed exactly to the letter. They're always exaggerated a little to prevent liability on the part of the manufacturer.Probably by the time the fabric softener would have done significant damage to the garment you would have had to buy a new one for a different reason anyway.
