Because they are either engaged in a fantasy that things will somehow magically change, or they have low self-esteem and feel at some level they don't deserve better. It's sad. I've been a victim of staying in relationships too long myself, seeing the writing on the wall, then being blindsided because the guy ends up leaving ME.
Women need to listen more to those inner feelings, intuitions, whatever doubts and questions that are coming up about the relationship - they should listen to those and act accordingly instead of allowing the guy to dictate the terms.
Great question.

Perhaps there's something in the relationship they value, or they cling to the fantasy of change. More often because they lack the self confidence (or courage?) to make their own way. It's common, even amongst women who have had great support from both parents in their childhood, and have achieved highly in their own work or other relationships. Maybe it's something in women's nature; maybe its the somewhat sick culture we live in, which makes going your own way harder for women than men. There's some comfort in the role of victim, or dependant. It relieves one of the uncertainties of making decisions. But the first decision lays the foundation for a road that gets better and easier. Ultimately we all make our own beds - largely by avoidance, and that applies to men as well as women.

A lot of smart women are extremely insecure, or weak. And some aren't as smart as you think they are. Just because a girl has a degree, doesn't mean she's smart.

Honey some people take their vows seriously, and are lucky to have the patience to endure. not everyone is perfect, but some are very good. Some are just tolerable. I think it depends on how strong your love is, and your patience. Some are not so smart. If it was an abusive relationship and they stick it out, now that is not to smart. God Bless. Hope you are lucky, patient, and smart.

I think the main reason is that they think that the other person will change. Deep down inside they know most likely that will not happen. I think it has to do with stability and knowing that there is someone there for them. Alot of women don't like being alone. I guess it is easier for them to stay and complain rather than search for another.

Cuz they feel no matter who they are with it will be the same book just a different cover so why bother. Women, while they may be smart, they do fail to understand that one tree does not a forest make.

That eternal hope that you can change your man is really what it comes down to. I think that women tend to think if they just try harder that they can make things work. Unfortunately men are stubborn creatures and generally do not change. If they do it's often for the worse.
I think it's the whole sense of emotional attachment and not being able to accept the fact that this is simply not the right guy...

Maybe because they made a commitment? But if you're talking about infidelity or an abusive relationship..............I sure don't understand it. I guess insecurity, or they somehow think they deserve it. Even smart women can have hangups.

because smart people mostly crave for stability and routineness.... it probably came with their childhood because since they where children they have found peace with routine, constant things and having a relationship that is fixed... means that it is secure... as far as they're concern
