I had to ask because I noticed that they both are titled after numbers, and both include the number in which it is titled after in the title. I haven't seen either movie, but was just curious.

No. This is an overused graphic design tactic. I first saw it in a logo design for a company called Senses - sen5es. Since then we've had Numb3rs, thr3e, se7en, and even the Spanish tr3s. (tres means three.) I'm sure there are others I'm missing.

As usual, someone sees a cool graphic design execution and everyone else copies it until people get sick of seeing it.

Nope. Completely unrelated.
Thr3e is a 2003 suspense novel written by best-selling Christian author Ted Dekker. The protagonist is Kevin Parson, a twenty-eight-year-old seminary student who one day receives a unique call on his cell phone while driving. The man on the other end identifies himself as Slater, and tells Kevin that he has precisely three minutes to confess his sin to the world or his car will explode. What follows is a cat and mouse game with Kevin, his childhood friend Samantha Sheer, and FBI agent Jennifer Peters struggling to keep up with the clues Slater sends their way; clues that lead to the most horrific events. Throughout all of this, Kevin, Slater, and Samantha find that they are connected more closely than any of them would have imagined. The film adaptation is being released this Friday I believe.
