I've been happily unmarried for 12 years. There are several reasons. Neither of us are religious, so we feel no need to be blessed by a church. It's not the staes business who we live with. All our children are grown so there is no conflict about custody issues. We are polyamorists and if another female joins us, we don't want her to feel like she is second class, or second choice.

I know elderly people who do it for economics. They get Social security or disability, and getting married would cut their income sometimes by a third, or they have wills leaving their assets to their children and a late marriage would cause the wills to have to be rewritten.

Marriage used to be the only option because of the community, your parents and the church, but nowadays the community we live in does not know you anymore, so we care less about what they think about us. I think that if a couple is commited to each other then you don't need a certificate to prove it. And if it does not work out (which happen in marriages often) then it is so much easier to move on with your life.

Some people think that testing the waters before hand will help them deciede if this person is for them and if they will be able to live with them after say marriage. However I think "why buy the cow if you can get the milk for free" Don't make it that easy. Make them have something to work towards. If they have it all now what's left for later
