Let me answer by first saying that I have 40 years experience in the health field. I started performing EEGs (electroencephalogams) in the early years of the technology. I have worked with a variety of normal and abnormal patients. By far the bulk of my patients have been children. Yes there is real attention deficit hyperactive (ADHD)disorders in people. All of us in the field for a long time have speculated why the disorder seems so prevalent now. So many things have changed in our society and technology has mushroomed. That with the increase in pollution, fast food, all kinds of additives in our food and drink and latch key kids. The mistake is often made that children are just little adults. Not true. Our brains are not fully developed until 18 to 19 years old. Children, because of incompletely developed nervous centers are more predisposed to neurological disorders such as ADHD and seizures. I do feel that there are children being treated with drugs that need family therapy intervention. In other words they are the result of poor parenting skills or no parenting skills. I think parenting has changed remarkably in the last 40 years. I agree there are children being treated that shouldn't be. However what I know for sure is that I have witnessed almost miraculous improvement in so many. It has pained me over the years to see parents withold treatment with medicine because they didn't want to give their children drugs only to condemn them to a life full of anger and negativity and failure. Before medicine they were in detention much of the time and barely passing. They couldn't color within the lines, write legibly or control their behavior. To be hyperactive is analagous to(normals) taking amphetimine with a pot of coffee and trying to be still. I believe we must balance the damage done to a child's psyche without meds to the good done as the child is able to function normally and not be fussed at constantly. What if all your experiences as a child consisted of failure and always being punished and the perpetual displeasure of those around you? I think we have to try many things to help these children. This condition is so real . We need more research to get to the bottom of this monumental problem with so many of our children.Seek a pediatric neurologist that specializes in this. You can not trust this to just any doctor. The first thing that must be done is to rule out and define pathology. Then the child must be tested and their should be evaluation of the child's home life. The treatment is not fjust meds.It has to be muli-directional to be effective. Yes,and somtimes we need to schedule with the Nanny. Really sorry to be so lengthy but this suject needs as much light on it as possible. We need so much more research to get at the cause. Our children are our future.

For sure, it is over treated and misdiagnosed. I've had plenty of field experience getting folks off of the ADHD meds and seeing that they simply had emotional or environmental issues to solve, and had been misdiagnosed, and wrongfully medicated. In many cases the meds made their condition worse, not better, and the first step to addressing the issues at hand was to discontinue the medication. Because the symptoms are so similar to a variety of other conditions, I think it is easy to misdiagnose, particularly in children, when parents and doctors would much rather slap a label on the behavior, and medicate it, rather than take the real time and effort to investigate the child's behavior and determine what is really happening with the child. I think ADHD is just one more reason for the drug companies to dispense meds and rack in huge profits. These days, just about everything is a "disorder" of some sort, including what used to be (and still is) very normal behavior. Excellent question you've asked and I hope it helps folks out there to take a second look at the overly convenient application of any mental health label -- particularly for parents as it pertains to their children.

Thankyou! I've been noticing for a long time that ADHD is grossly over-diagnosed. While there may be a legitimate mental condition which causes children to act hypermanically, I think the causes for it are largely due to the kid's attempts at trying to gain attention. Otherwise, why are the vast majority (75%) of children diagnosed with ADHD from broken or dysfunctional homes? And what's worse, the most popular drug in treating ADHD is Ritalin, which is speed, pure and simple. An amphetamine. This makes the condition worse in the cases where the disease is not organic and legitimate, but merely psychosomatic. It is a very damaging drug; I can look at someone in there late teens or even their 20's and tell you if they were a "Ritalin Kid" from the psuedo-mongoloid, blank look on their faces. Parents need to spend more time with their kids and quit blaming the kids' disruptive behavior on fictitious diseases. And, BTW--the second most over-diagnosed mental illness is BiPolar.

I know that ADHD is real because my son has it. I have also seen that some children are misdiagnosed with ADHD. I made sure that my Dr did all the test possible for my son to make sure there wasnt any other problems going on.

ADHD as well as ADD are both very real and need to be treated, however they are highly over treated and misdiagnosed. Parents found a drug that will make their hyper little one calm down. The kids hate it because it brings them down. More parents need to tend to their unruly children and go back to that good old fashioned spanking as punishment for acting a fool.

Believe or not, ADHD (and the 100+ other psych labels) are MADE UP "diseases" in order to sell drugs (i.e. Ritalin, Prozac, etc.) and profit billions off the unsuspecting people of the US and world -- and MOSTLY the insurance companies. (Documented FACT).
If you are worried/concerned about any lacking of attention or hyperactivity of yourself or others you know, there are LOGICAL reasons AND HANDLINGS for this. For example: ever fall asleep in a trig class? Or would you fall asleep if you had to sit in a trig class? Well, you probably didn't understand the class - (attention lacking???). Similarly if you or anyone "goes by" anything they don't know - and can thus get confused about, etc. etc. As for hyperactivity --- well, cut the diets of sugar and processed foods and I'm sure any hyperactivity would drop by half (I've tried it -- it works).

I do...I have a 15 year old male cousin who was diagnosed with it about 2 years ago....He was an EXTREMELY intelligent, and active (well hyper as his mom calls it)boy. His mother was told by his teachers at school to have his diagnosed as having ADHD and then they put him on medication. He is NOT the same kid that I knew... He doesn't go outside to play anymore, he is flunking almost all of his subjects in school, and he is starting to become very aggressive towards his mother and other adults. My cousins mother wanted to take him off the meds but the doctor refused saying it wasn't in the child's best interest, and that if she didn't give them to him she could have him taken away from her and placed in the custody of the state. Parents, please get a second opinion, because if you get your child diagnosed, he will may have to take meds for the rest of his life!!

I think ADD is a label teachers put on kids when the teacher is unable or unwilling to to teach a child.
I think many doctors go along with what the teachers think. Reality is you have bad curriculum or a bad teacher.
Johnny and his grades were remarkably improved when his teachers "thought" he had been put on medication.

Hyperactivity is different and presents normally with extremely short sleep cycles. Of course before leaping to the label that is put on the child, colas and sugar need restricted to see the influence.
