My advice would be to use OpenOffice, produced by Sun Microsystems at no cost to the end user. Their web site is OpenOffice.org, and you can download the entire suite of applications free of charge. "Calc" is the suite's equivalent of Excel.

If you don't have to actually do any work on the spreadsheet, you can use a free viewer. This will let you print. If you want to work on it for free, you will need to get Open Office.

This is an Excel 2003 viewer.

Download and use the trial-version of Office from Microsoft. So long as you get your work done before the trial period is over, you're fine. After the trial period, make your employer purchase the license. Since it's for work, this shouldn't really be your problem, unless your work-agreement requires you posess your own copy of MS Office. If you do end up purchasing your own license, and it isn't reimbursed by your employer, you can declare it as a non-reimbursed business expense on your tax-return.
