It means simply that you are responsible for giving your own life meaning, and that you shouldn't waste it with activities, beliefs, or people that don't help you fulfill that purpose.
The easiest way to understand its application is by talking about career choice. If you choose a career doing something you love, even if it doesn't make as much money as you wish or has other drawbacks, then you are following your bliss. But I think he meant it to apply to a much broader context than that. We should follow our bliss in everything. Humans don't function on a proper level when they shortchange themselves willfully in order to fit in with others' expectations.
I'm sorry you don't enjoy the Power of Myth; I find Joseph Campbell fascinating. Have you tried watching his old video series "Transformations of Myth through Time"? It's perhaps a little more approachable, although it's hard to locate. It originally aired on PBS, so perhaps you could order a copy of it from them.
If you're interested in some of his more serious academic work, try his "Masks of God" series. The books on Occidental and Oriental Mythology are full of fascinating, revelatory details about the evolution of myth throughout various civilizations.

Follow your bliss means Follow your purpose, your passion, that message you have deep inside your heart. Follow your heart, the reason you are here. There is a big difference between following your head and following your heart. (your bliss). Following your head will put you on a path of thinking how much you need to do this or that. It is also basing your life on your own effort, work, and belief. Following your heart will put you on the path of self discovery, using your talents, not much thinking about money, because money will come as you go your true path, your purpose, your bliss.
So follow your bliss can be follow your purpose, and /or follow your heart.
I hop ethi s will help.

RE:
What does it mean to "follow your bliss", as Joseph Campbell meant it?
Please point me in the right direction for synposes or more easier ways to understand Campbell's advice to "follow your bliss". I find the Power of Myth to be very dry and boring to listen to, and perhaps lack the patience to slog through his writings, but I think Campbell's...

It does take awhile to read his stuff, but it's totally worth it. I think "follow your bliss" simply means to do what makes you happy, and not worry about how you will get paid or what will happen to you. don't try to calculate or plan your life BEYOND doing what makes you happy. if you follow your bliss, doors that you thought were closed will open up to you. i think he said this often to his students, because he had a kind heart and wanted them to take risks and not be afraid to be themselves.

If you lack the patience to "slog" through his writings then following your bliss is what you would be doing. Ignorance is bliss.

It means do what you love to do. For me, it also connotes a sense of carpe diem, as well as a humanist recognition. Doing what you love to do can be scary, but it's the right thing to do. It is the purpose of your life and is indeed the only way to give your life meaning - it can only come from you.

Follow your bliss means move in delight, love life ....seek out the experiences that give you deep joy. (not superficial crap that leaves you feeling like the quick fix wasn't worth it after all)It is when we follow our bliss that we connect to our inner child, our spirit and possibly THE MEANING OF LIFE!!!! (for us)
