I am an aspiring teacher who is very much excited about entering into the world of elementary education. Currently, I am enrolled in a 18-month alternative teaching certification program (content area: social studies) and, hopefully, will be working as a full-time teacher by August of this year. I was just wondering if there are any teaching professionals out there that could shed some light on the profession, offer a little advice, and/or offer a few tips that will help me along the way. Any response you could provide will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I commend you on your desire to be a teacher. I never wanted to do anything else for a career, and I listened to my heart and have now been teaching for nearly 25 years. First of all, know that you will work harder than you ever have during those first years of teaching. You will no doubt spend quite a bit of your own money and put in untold hours of overtime, but I believe it's all worth it. Also, get to know your colleagues right away. Nothing beats a knowledgeable co-teacher to show you the ins and outs of the school you'll be assigned to. Don't be afraid to ask questions. It will show that you have a desire to know and learn about your new situation. Share yourself with your students...they are just as eager to learn about you as you are about them. Also, make sure to take photos of everything you do...projects, field trips, bulletin boards, etc. to assemble in a portfolio of your experiences. This becomes a valuable photo journal and conversation starter for future job interviews, etc. Best of luck to you in your education and future career. How exciting!

Parents now and days are so scared of going to jail behind parenting their kids they let their kids do anything. Have a strong backbone. Don't let them kids disrespect you or run you crazy. Teachers take alot of crap considering they get paid so little and i commend you on wanting to be a teacher. I wish you the best of luck!

Growing up, the teachers who made the best impression on me were the ones who were the most enthusiastic since they obviously seemed like they wanted to be there the most. Plus, enthusiasm is contagious!!!

Good luck on your teaching career :)

The biggest lesson I learned is that calm is strength. You need to be consistent but flexible (not always easy). Do not raise your voice. Don't hand out group punishments. Give second, but not third, chances. Establish a firm, but fair, system of discipline. BE ORGANIZED!
