Here are some stipulations:
1. 4-6 lbs. (I will be taking it to campus a lot)
2. 512 RAM or 1 GIG of RAM if possible
3. Long battery life
4. Dual Core Processor or at least 1.6-1.8 GIG
5. If not a Dual Core Processor, then 2.2 GIG plus

i assume you will need wireless, so make sure you got it as standard or add it in

you didnt mention the LCD size. if you want long battery life, get a laptop with the smallest LCD monitor you can stand.

you also didnt mention if you needed a 3d graphics processor for gaming. if you did it would also eat into your battery life.

ultimately, you may want to carry an extra battery around. so that will add to the weight unless your campus has a lot of free power points

Get a Pentium 4 with 512 of RAM and you should be fine.
