I have had 3 children and have researched and spoken with my dr's about muths of induceing labor. Why do so many people still claim that sex, walking, teas, and other non sense induce labor? According to the dr and discovery health whom did a documentary called pregnancy for dummies said these are all myths and do NOT work. nothing will work unless the baby is ready to come and even if you did nothing, when its time its time. i tried all of those things hoping and nothing ever worked which is what got me to researching teh truth about it. People stop telling these poor exhausted moms that this stuff works cause all there going to do is wear themselves out trying all of it instead of resting up for the delivery when its time.

im not saying its bad to do those things but it is bad to give false info to those that dont know any better. just because u have been told these things work for the past years doesnt mean that they havent been proven to be myths and now there old wives tales that people keep shoving down others throats

You are so right. I wish i never listened to people when they told me to try all of those things. My daughter was 2 weeks late. I tried everything. By the time my daughter came I was so exhausted. Now I wish I would just stayed off my feet and rested up.

Walking does not induce labor. Neither does castor oil, stripping, or anything else. However, sex really did put me in labor. I was a week late and had tried everything else. The sex left me feeling feeling a little sick, pained, and uncomfortable, and that feeling just got worse and worse until a few hours later I realized that I was in labor. I was scheduled for an induction the next morning, however, and ended up having my son 8 hours after being hooked up to pitocin.

I'm sure, though, that if we had tried sex a couple weeks earlier, it would not have worked. It was just time for him to come (within a day or so....)

I would say walking did something for me. I went to a ball game a few days prior to my water breaking, they had a whole lot of stairs to climb and I did just that without thinking about induction of labor. Next day baby dropped, but not much else. Following day my water broke but had minimal contractions. My labor really didn't start because baby wasn't ready as proof of my not dilating. However the walking did break my water which sent me to the hospital and put me on pitocin. SO walking must do something or else I would have been waiting another couple of weeks till the baby was ready! So much for a myth!

Because they want to believe in those things! And that's not all, they have a load of stories about things to do to improve your labor, to get the baby to sleep better, geez... they even think that "certain" sexual positions can make you get pregnant with a boy or a girl...
well, I just try to ignore all the goofy stuff they tell me, and I just read and read and read, and ask the doctors....
I am sure they should know better, but hey! sometimes even doctors are clueless!
I say this because my doctor screwed up telling me to give my baby a bottle at night, even though she was only 2 weeks old, and I wanted to breastfeed, this caused her to get confused between the breast and the bottle, and I had to stop breastfeeding when she was 2 months old... and then I read in a book that you should not start the bottle before 2 months of age, if you want to breastfeed... but aparently my doctor at the time missed the class when they said that at medicine school... :(
Conclusion: you should try to get feedback from a variety of sources, and the information that's most consistent, most likely will be the truth.

Have a good one!

I think walking helped me alot I walked the whole pregancy and it strengthened my pelvic muscles and my whole body so I think that myth is true and sex can induce labor in some I know it did to a couple of my friends they did it by accident not trying. But you are right about ppl trying to induce their own labor the baby definitely comes when they are ready.

thats exactly what they are though "old wives tales" nothing can make you go into to labour short of your doctor giving you a cervical scraping but theres nothing worse than thinking theres nothing you can do i don't think anyone actually believes that having sex will put you right into labour it maybe hurry things along a few minutes but there is the hope it gives that you can have the tiniest bit of control over whats going on even thou you really can't and whos to say it doesn't help at all?? it could help a little the doctor doesn't know exactly when you will "POP" so how can he say it didn't speed it you a few minutes here or there i say why do you want to tear away an excitied mothers dreams of hurrying things along

Some People want to believe certain things work. People like to believe in something and people like to believe that they have control over things. If they admitted that they had no control over a certain situation(when the baby is going to come out) where would they be then? What would happen if they had no control over a situation and there was nothing they can do about it.

Besides it is kind of fun to believe in old wives tales isn't it?

I think it has became a misunderstanding. These things can help a woman remain in labor and help her labor progress- they can not induce labor. If a woman is doing these things to get labor going naturally she probably won't have much luck. These things are only effective in keeping labor going and helping progress labor. Not in inducing it.

I think people shouldn't go around telling prego women what do to to bring on labour but sharing their experiences is fine. Everyone is different and I see your point, with my first she was 2 weeks early, I was very healthy and everything went smoothly. With my second it was not such a great pregnancy and in the end I chose induction-not good!!He was not ready and it took me 16hrs of labour!!When it's time it's time but there are some circumstances that I do believe will bring it on early, it's all about seeing your doctor regurlary and asking lots of questions.
