I bought this sucker a few days back from a private party. It's got 160,000 miles on it.

Try changing the trans filter and replace fluid.
I was told when the screen starts getting clogged that it will take a few seconds to engage especially when it is cold out side due to fluid restriction going through the screen.

It's 16 years old and has 160,000 miles. Check the fluid lever in the tranny. If it's okay, start looking for a rebuilt transmission.

Sounds like slipping clutch packs (I am sure some ford expert will shoot me down in flames) probably just needs a good auto service...

Have you checked the transmission level when it's hot? It may be low, otherwise, might be a physical transmission problem.

i whoud first check the fluid level if it fine i wouldnt worry too much unless its not shifting
