I've been a licensed massage therapist in Seattle for over 20 years, and I do make a living at it. Some weeks are better than others, though ;-) I charge $70 for an hour, $100 for an hour and a half. The going rate here is anywhere from $55 to $80 for an hour. That sounds really good until you realize that you're not going to make that kind of money 40 hours a week. Even if you could get that many clients, most people couldn't handle doing that many massages.
The average massage therapist can perform a maximum of 4-6 sessions a day comfortably. Then the next step is to actually bring in the clients. A self-employed massage therapist in a competitive location may be fortunate to do 10-15 sessions a week. Of course, depending on your marketing and networking skills, you may do a whole lot better or worse. In other words, you can do really, really well with massage. Or you can do really, really bad. It's a business just like any other. And if you choose to be self-employed your business and marketing skills will be just as important as your massage skills.
On the other hand, if you work for someone else, you'll get paid a set rate or a percentage for each massage you do. And you'll probably still have to do some marketing to build your clientele. Be sure you know what they'll take care of and what they won't before you go into a clinic situation: table, linens, laundry, promotion, health insurance, etc. They might even pay for some of your continuing education (which is required in some states, and if you're nationally certified).
A massage clinic or spa job will probably pay, on average, somewhere between $10-35/hour, depending on location, experience and other factors. In a spa setting you'll be more likely to get tips but have less control over the type of massage you do (more relaxation-style massage); in a clinic setting, you won't get as many tips, but may encounter more varied "problems." Depends what you're looking for career-wise.
Anyway, you *can* make a great living at massage, and it's a great career, but do go into it with your eyes wide open!
I'm including a link to my site so you can get an idea of what I offer.
Best of luck!

Heck, even some government companies require a undeniable proportion of workers to artwork from homestead a minimum of 20% of the time.
