Just wondering.

I'm 14.. I don't plan to be sexually active until marriage, so obviously that's after I'm 18. So, when I'm 18 I should start then, except for if there's a problem or something then obviously go earlier than that, but 18 is a good age to start?

My daughter is 17 and even though they diagnosed her with polycystic ovaries (through blood tests - - elevated hormone levels), they said there was no need to examine her. They said there would be no need until she became sexually active.

But if you ever think of becoming sexually active, you might want to go so they can place you on the right type of birth control that is right for you.

When you turn 18, or when you become sexually active. Sexually active includes everything, not just sex. Certain diseases can be transmitted orally and infections are very common and may be caused by contact to your vagina (in and out) by hands.

Also, if anything seems different than usual, get it checked out.

If you are sexually active - there are some STD's that are asymptomatic and you may not know you have them. Make sure you start getting checked out as soon as possible to prevent infections, infertility, and worse. Talking to your friends is a good supplement to the doctor, as well.

I started having pap smears when I was 16 years old and have gone every year since. I am now 52. I have always taken very good care of my body. Try not to be scared. It is what women need to do to stay healthy and be pro active against health issues that can affect our lives.

I had the same thoughts about my daughter so I asked my gyn

And his answer is as soon as she has her menstral. Female problems can go undetected for awhile a become serious so any female should get there yearly exam after their first menstral. This is per a gyn.

Since you're not having sex and don't have any problems, you can wait until you're 18.
If you start to have sex before then, start seeing the Gyn.

I started going when I was 19.
